Physician's account books and daybooks, scrapbooks of writings and general memorabilia. Dr. J. Henry Clark's account books (2 volumes) include patient names, details of examinations, diagnosis and treatment, medicines dispensed, and fees charged. Dr. Clark's scrapbooks of published works cover medical topics, such as the Newark cholera epidemic (1849), cesarean sections, the use and abuse of stimulants, lager beer as medicine, hospitals, sanitary conditions and eye and ear problems, as well as temperance and general religious topics. Dr. James Henry Clark, Jr.'s daybook, 1888-1896, is a daily record of patients he treated, with names, addresses, illnesses, treatments, and fees. Also, a scrapbook, 1850s-1914, kept by the two Dr. Clarks, containing ephemera of the American Medical Association and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, as well as letters, calling cards and Europeaon vacation receipts.

J. (James) Henry Clark (1814-1869), a Newark, N.J. (Essex County) physician. In 1856, he founded the Newark Eye and Ear Infirmary, the first organization of its kind in New Jersey. President of the Essex District Medical Society in 1867, he also decided disability and pension cases until his death in Montclair, N.J. in 1869. His son, James Henry Clark, Jr. (1853-1945), also a Newark physician, served as an eye and ear surgeon at St. Michael's Hospital in Newark (1883-1915), and as Newark police ...
